Tasmania's Rugged West - Strahan and the Gordon River

There are many areas in Tasmania where you can visit the beautiful pristine wilderness. In fact much of Tasmania has been designated as a World Heritage Area. Of note is the west coast, the Gordon River and the village of Strahan which is the gateway to this area for many tourists visiting Tasmania.

Strahan - The West Coast of Tasmania

For many years Strahan was really not a tourist hot spot. In fact it was a port of call for many of the Cray Fishing boat fleets that braved the unpredictable and often severe weather that can pound the West Coast of Tasmania. There was a pub and a port.

These days Strahan has tourist accommodation, a choice of restaurants and even a conference centre. It has become a popular destination for many tourists to begin their tour of the rugged western wilderness.

From the port in Strahan people are able to join a cruise that will take you out of the harbour and down the magnificent Gordon River. The Lady Jane Franklin is a modern, comfortable, fast, quiet and eco-friendly cruise ship

that will take you on a journey to remember down one of the world's only rivers that exists as it it did thousands of years ago. The Gordon River Cruises offer luxury cruises through unspoilt rainforest in this World Heritage listed Tasmanian wilderness. You will see the Gordon and Franklin rivers, Sarah Island convict settlements, the famous 2,000 year old Huon Pine Trees and more with accredited expert nature guides.

There is much to see and do in this isolated part of the world including fishing, a visit to the 30 kilometer long sandy Ocean Beach, jet boat rides, seaplane tours, helicopter tours, sandboarding (like snowboarding but on sand), four wheel drive tours and much more. So make sure you give yourself plenty of time. The natural tendency for travellers to Australia is to try to see everything in a short time period and you will surely miss a lot if you are rushed during your visit to the west coast of Tasmania.
